Integrated Food Security Programme (IFSP)

 

This is the one of the main programmes that we run and integrates various activities that affect food security in our region. Under this programme we have the following five projects;

Integrated Initiatives to Combat Food Insecurity
Activities carried out in this project include;

  • Promotion of dry land agricultural technologies
  • Livestock improvement (pasture establishment and management, goat upgrading, apiculture and indigenous poultry)
  • Increase water access for domestic, livestock and supplementary irrigation
  • Economic empowerment through Village Savings and Loan Schemes (VSLs)
  • Capacity building of Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and groups to be more cohesive and organized to champion their development.

This is a three year project targeting 15,000 individual farmers

 

Wanzauni Livelihood Improvement Project
Activities carried out in this project include;

  • Promotion of dry land agricultural technologies
  • Livestock improvement (pasture establishment and management, goat upgrading, apiculture and indigenous poultry)
  • Increase water access for domestic, livestock and supplementary irrigation
  • Economic empowerment through Village Savings and Loan Schemes (VSLs)
  • Capacity building of Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and groups to be more cohesive and organized to champion their development

This is also a three year project targeting individual 13,545 farmers.

 

Integrated Approaches in Disaster Risk Reduction in Lower Eastern
This project integrates components of Agriculture, Water and Sanitation, Environmental Protection, Prevention and Control of Human and Livestock Diseases and Flood/soil Erosion Control. All these are geared towards increasing the communities’ resilience to effects of climate change and increase production.

NB; All these projects are begun with a baseline surveys followed by Participatory Vulnerability Capacity Assessments (PVCA) where all the vulnerabilities at the community level are assessment including the capacities that exist. The program design comes in to strengthen the existing capacities within the communities to enable them carry forward their development.

 

Kenya Value Chain Enterprises
This is part of the USAID feed the future Programme and is on commercialization of three value chains namely; Horticulture, Dairy and Staples

This is a 2 year project targeting 20,000 farmers

 

Integrated Soil fertility Management
This project is geared towards improving food security and incomes of smallholder farmers through cereal-legume intensification in Eastern Kenya

This is a three year project targeting 10,000 farmers.
