Transforming Futures: Mohamed Abdi’s Story of Improved Education and Community Life Through the Leheley Water Project

Mohamed Abdi is a 9years old boy enrolled at Sankuri Primary school coming from a family of 5 and he is the eldest son. His father is a farmer and a member of the Leheley farm group while the mother is housewife and the family is entirely dependable on the farm produce. The group has a farm and was supported by ADSE through various interventions undertaken under the Garrissa Livelihood Improvement Project (GLIP) being implemented at Sankuri Location.

“Water for domestic use had been a challenge to our community and we lacked water to drink while in school and even to perform household chores and adequately support the 200 households in the village. As a result, we used to fetch water after school since my father is usually working on the farm and my mother is taking care of my other siblings. I did not have enough time to read after school due to the involvement of household activities” Mohamed says.

The completion of the Leheley water project has significantly changed our lives as school going children as well as our village as we do not go to the river to fetch water after school. This has created more time for us to conduct our studies in the evenings. As a result, my performance in school has greatly improved from previous records and in turn, the school performance has also improved. The water project has also improved on hygiene and sanitation levels in our school as well as in the village due to the accessible water supply for domestic use
