Empowering Lives: Fatuma Mohamed’s Journey to Self-Reliance Through Farming

Fatuma Mohamed, 35 years of age is a single mother of 5 children, 3 girls and 2 boys and lives at Bula Hodan in Sankuri location of Garissa County. Fatuma is a farmer who owns few goats that members of the Bara farmer group were supported with through the GLIP Program. The program has been supporting the farmers through various interventions such as creating linkages to government credit and financial services, farmer trainings in irrigation horticulture & livestock management and farming as a business enterprise. Through the trainings, Fatuma has gained knowledge and skills on farm management and can now utilize them on her farm to support her family.  Bara farm, the group she is a member was supported with the construction and upgrading of a concrete canal in the farm that they had been using for irrigation on their farm to earn their income.

Fatuma says, “My life as a single mother has been full of challenges as I have to look for food and guidance to my children and the upgrading of the canal saved us on the fuel consumption we purchase to run the irrigation processes of the farm. I used to incur a lot of cost to run our water pump on daily basis but upon the upgrade, I now purchase fuel only twice a week and I have managed to cut costs and save more.”

When ADSE started implementing the GLIP project in our location and reconstructed the canal, I grew vegetables and bananas in my small farm. From the sale of the vegetables, I made an income of Kshs. 12,500 which I used to buy food for my family and paid school fees. I am also selling mango seedings that I have planted on the farm. With these results, I have discovered that I am capable of changing my life using my farm. With the cultural differences in the society, I have learnt that women are capable of doing what men can do to take care of their families.

I am grateful for ADSE for the support they have continued to offer to us as a community as we have seen the visible changes in our lives.
